Can't Wait 'Til Wednesday

Well, Dr Who Wednesday has come early this week with the news that Warlord Games have secured the licence to produce a Dr Who Miniatures Game.

To me the most significant part of the announcement is that
The licence covers not just the latest series of Doctor Who but encompasses all of the Doctors, their companions and their foes. So, expect to see Sea Devils as much as Weeping Angels, Leela as much as Martha Jones, and a long, brightly coloured scarf as much as a fez (fezzes are cool, by the way...).
There have been grumblings from those who ask what impact it will have on BTD or the others that produce NOT-Who stuff.  Well, BTD will presumably continue to have the licence to produce figures from their worn-out moulds and continue to be tardy in sending them out.  I won't weep to see them have reasonably-priced competition (especially as Warlord's figures will probably actually resemble the Doctors and Companions -  witness how good their Dad's Army figures are).

More interesting will be what happens to Crooked Dice and Hasslefree, who have been making decent Dr Who figures.  Will Warlord protect their investment and will those lines be curtailed?

Interesting developments indeed...

  2. It's certainly a surprise. Personally I think more Who figs is a definite plus especially if they release plastic baddies! As for the rules I'm interested but hope they do small skirmish as opposed to Bolt Action scale battles...but if they do go for bigger then I already have a hard copy of Crooked Dice's DWMG.

    1. Ah, but the worry is that it won't be more, but less if those manufactures without a licence are required to stop selling.

I think there will be some panic-buying this weekend!

  3. Just to maintain my curmudgeon quotent, although I'm not much of a Dr Who fan (although I watch the TV shows), I did get a cardiac murmur, not about the impending release of the game, but about seeing Warlord described as "reasonably priced competition". My forecast is that they'll charge top dollar and then continue to squeeze every possible penny out of the punteers. BUT, I'm sure fans will gladly pay it.

    1. Well Crooked Dice and Hasslefree aren't cheap. What Warlord did with Judge Dreadd compares with them.

What people are looking forward to are box sets of plastics. Being able to get multiple Daleks, UNIT troops, etc.

  4. This was a nice surprise this morning. John from http://johnstoysoldiers.blogspot.co.uk/ confirmed that he is writing the rules for it. He has previously written books for Bolt Action and Hail Caesar for Warlord.

I do prefer Crooked Dice's recent sculpting style compared to Warlord, so it will be interesting to see how things pan out.
